Nothing indicated the controller was compatible with the Mac operating system and I wasn’t able to explore further, but given its namesake isn’t likely to ever become available for Apple’s OS, it’s probably a moot issue anyway.

Plug ‘n play is the general rule here, but before exploring Eorzea you’ll need to head over to the official Snakebyte website and download the custom FFXIV driver to enable compatibility with the game (to help auto-map buttons and enable Function options) for use with Windows XP, Vista & 7 (32 & 64 Bit versions).
Of course, the main attraction to playing with the Final Fantasy XIV controller is actually playing it with Final Fantasy XIV, which is (surprisingly) a vast improvement over using the standard keyboard and mouse option.

The only (minor) gripe is that I wish the d-pad had a little more grip / texture to it, much like Snakebyte did with their own PS3 Premium Bluetooth Controller. The dual analog sticks are also clickable, but this added functionality is only really useful in one of the controller’s biggest surprises (more on that later). The controller is wired with a 9 foot long USB cable and features two analog sticks, digital d-pad, dual vibration, and 12 digital buttons (which include a function button and analog on/off button) and dual vibration with on/off button. I’ve read about folks complaining about / mocking the way the controller is shaped, but I love how the grips are longer on the sides, which fits people with bigger hands (like myself) perfectly. Right off the bat, the controller feels nice and sturdy in your hands. Even if the game that shares its name with isn’t your cup of tea (and it may not be), don’t let that stop you from checking out what Snakebyte’s otherwise excellent option. If anything, it was that controller’s exquisite molding and comfortable feel that helped convince Square-Enix to work with them here, as practically everything – minus the wireless – from that design is reproduced here in all its functional glory.

If it looks familiar, it should, as its pretty much the exact same build the company used previously with their wireless PS2 controller some years back. This is clearly an adventure that requires a true console-style gamepad to get you through, and that’s where Snakebyte’s officially-licensed game controller comes into play. While most MMORPG’s are meant to be played with keyboard and mice, Square-Enix’s Final Fantasy XIV isn’t which is something that’ll become clear as day the moment you begin your questing.
